Logic is my lord and savior.. my only lord and savior.
Have you used logic to make someone else's possession your own, to not tell the truth, to hurt someone, to take advantage of someone of the opposite sex for selfish reasons, to be unfaithful, or to bear false witness ?
Has your logic and your reasoning ever caused you to do an evil act ?
Jesus taught that evil reasonings can come out of the heart too.
"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil reasonings, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, foolishness. All these wicked things proceed from within and defile the man." (Mark 7:21-23)
Have you ever stopped yourself to ask "Exactly what am I using my logic to do here?"

Originally posted by jaywillIt sounds like you are not describing logic there, but more like the stories that people like to make up to justify acts they cannot justify otherwise. Very similar to the stories they make up to justify beliefs they cannot justify otherwise. (I am not saying they are not justified in holding those beliefs only that they are unable to communicate their actual reasons for the belief and therefore resort to making up stories which they then claim are reasonable and logical).

I didn't set out to make a formal definition of logic.

???
Sounds like a rebuttal in search of a debate.
I think logic should be required and taught at the high school level. Too many people either don't understand it or have a very poor understanding of it. Few things in life are more useful than being able to analyze cause and effect through logic.
Logic is a noble diety - you could do much worse. 🙂

I second that -and I would go further by suggesting that logic should be taught to children from a young age at least to a rudimentary level and then progressively to a more advanced level as they grow up:
Originally posted by jaywillI never said nor implied that you were. You were however claiming to be talking about other people using logic as a justification for undesirable behavior and my comment is that people will make up anything they can to justify such behavior and thought they may call it logic it is not, nor is logic to blame for such behavior (as you seemed to be implying).

Originally posted by Andrew HamiltonI strongly suspect that our schools already aim to do just that. It seems thought based on what we see in these forums that they are not particularly successful.

Other people ?? Why are you so quick to assume that I would not be including myself as well ?

We often use logic to commit sins. We also use it do good works.

My intention was not to blame logic for everything negative. My intention was to point out that is may be risky to make it one's "lord and savior".
