"Motivated reasoning is the phenomenon in cognitive science and social psychology in which emotional biases lead to justifications or decisions based on their desirability rather than an accurate reflection of the evidence." wiki
I think I engage in motivated reasoning when it comes to political issues, albeit less and less as I get older. I don't think I use motivated reasoning in spiritual matters so much but, then again, the nature of "the evidence" is different. Maybe I do.
What about you?
@fmf saidBefore we get to me (not that there's much of anyone home) I wonder if we could also introduce panpsychism and the resonance hypothesis of consciousness into the discussion.

@fmf saidIMHO motivated reasoning is interesting to discuss, but nearly impossible to accomplish. One of the things that makes us human beings is our individual mental filters which we use to analyze information, without these filters, we'd be little more than computers or robots.

@fmf saidYes, I see that, but you asked, "You see motivated reasoning as something to accomplish... in a good way?" You didn't specify a forum now, did you?
But we are conversing on a Spirituality Forum.
My answer would have been the same no matter what forum we were in, so why are you switching the topic to forums?
@mchill saidNo, I'm saying we are talking about motivated reasoning in the context of a Spirituality Forum, obviously, so why would you want to "to accomplish" it in terms of spiritual matters? What does it have to do with maths and chess?

@fmf saidI'm repeating myself because you didn't seem to get it the 1st time around.
Why are you repeating yourself? Are you flustered?
On a different topic now....I blame myself for all of this. It was my fault for getting into these discussions in the 1st place. I'm here to study, play, and improve at chess, not to debate other topics. With this in mind, my presence in these forums will be far less from now on and will leave folks like you float along in the 1000 rating range year after year. The workday awaits, then exercise, then 90 min. of tactics. Hope to finish the Woodpecker Method by February and play on the Western Class Championships in March.
- Goodbye 🙂
