Nope. His death would have come at the hands of the Pharisees regardless. Judas was just a helper. Useful but not a requirement.

Do you believe Jesus needed to be betrayed by a Jew or Jews, and not, for example, simply apprehended on a street in Jerusalem by Romans?

Well it was prophesied that he would be betrayed by his own. I would guess the reason being that helped open the door for the Gentiles.

That's actually a surprising opinion, to me.

Most of the gamers of the law realize that they need an excuse to convict when the evidence doesn't quite get them there.

According to the law of Moses, blasphemy is sufficient for the death penalty. It's an easy conviction. All they needed was the approval of the Roman Governor who does not give two hoots either way.
