It's a myth that it was upside down.
God moves through both the lost like King Cyrus and of course the saved and redeemed.
Peter was crucified upside down. When a Catholic wears a cross upside down they are being like Peter in saying that their not worthy to be like Christ.

That symbolism is also used that way in The Conjuring II and Penny Dreadful, first series, among other more recent movies and tv shows.
