If you don't believe in sin, you have no reason to cast the Stone, for the person you would be pelting with it would not have sinned either. Thus, a belief in sin is required for casting the First Stone, although such belief does not necessarily have to be accord with the Christian notion of sin.

Sure you can. Didn't you ever hear the story of the Garden of Eden? Adam and Eve could eat every damn piece of fruit they wanted, except the fruit from one special true. Similarly here, you can throw stones to your heart's content. But there's one special stone you can't just throw around -- the First Stone. Only he who is without sin may cast the First Stone.
