The Anointing oil used to anoint the tabernacle in Exodus 40:9 typifies God the Spirit compounded with the Triune God, Christ's humanity, Christ's death with its effectiveness, and Christ's resurrection with its power. This Anointing oil is the compound ointment described in Exodus 30:23-25: “Take the finest spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred fifty shekels, and of fragrant calamus two hundred fifty shekels, and of cassia five hundred shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make it a holy Anointing oil, a fragrant ointment compounded according to the work of a compounder; it shall be a holy Anointing oil.”

The olive oil signifies the Spirit of God. The three units of five hundred shekels each, the measure of the spices, signify the Trinity, the three of the Godhead. The middle unit of five hundred shekels was split into two halves of two hundred fifty shekels each, signifying the second of the Trinity, who was “split” in crucifixion as the cleft rock (John 19:34; Exo. 17:6). The one hin of olive oil signifies the unique God, and the four spices signify Christ's humanity, since the number four denotes God's creatures (Ezek. 1:5), of which man is the head (Gen. 1:26). Myrrh, a spice used in burial, typifies Christ's death, and cinnamon typifies the sweetness and effectiveness of His death. Calamus, a reed growing in marshy ground, typifies the resurrection of Christ, and cassia, used to repel insects and snakes, typifies the power of Christ's resurrection. The ANointing oil was used to anoint every part of the tabernacle (Exo. 30:26-30; 40:9-11, 13). In other words, the entire tabernacle within and without was painted with this oil. The ANointing oil corresponds to the Spirit after Christ's resurrection, the Spirit in the Epistles. John 7:39 says, “The Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.” After Christ's resurrection the Spirit was compounded to include the Triune God, Christ's humanity, Christ's death with its effectiveness, and Christ's resurrection with its power.

Many Christians know the Passover lamb, the heavenly manna, and the living water. A number of hymns have been written on the Passover, the manna, and the living water. However, many Christians have never read a book or listened to a message on the compound ointment.

Recently I looked into what others had to say regarding the compound ointment in Exodus 30. In his Synopsis J. N. Darby has only a short word on the ointment and the incense. In his notes on the Pentateuch, C. H. Mackintosh says that in the holy anointing oil “we discern a type of the varied graces of the Holy Ghost, which were found, in all their divine fullness, in Christ.” But he does not tell us what these graces are. The writing of C. A. Coates on Exodus 30 shows a great improvement. With respect to the ointment, he uses the term the Spirit of Christ many times. Few writers use this expression; most speak of the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, or even the Holy Ghost. Furthermore, Coates speaks of “the Spirit of the Man of God's pleasure” and also of “the Spirit of another Man—even of the Man who is at God's right hand.” This indicates that Coates saw that the Spirit of Christ is not only the Spirit of God, but also the Spirit of another Man. Concerning the four spices, Coates says that they “represent all those features of grace which were so perfectly blended and harmonized in the Spirit of Christ.” Coates realized something concerning the blending of the spices with the olive oil. Four kinds of spices were compounded with the olive oil to make the ointment.

The anointing oil in Exodus 30 certainly signifies one of the deeper truths in the Bible. I am concerned that some among us have not yet realized much concerning this deeper truth. Therefore, we need to know the significance of the compound ointment.

    ITS SIGNIFICANCE

The compound ointment was used to anoint the tabernacle with all its furniture, the altar with all its utensils, the laver with its base, and the priests (30:26-30). This ointment signifies God, who is triune, after a long process becoming the all-inclusive compound Spirit to reach His chosen and redeemed people to be one with them.

It certainly was good for the children of Israel to enjoy the Passover, the manna from heaven, and the water from the rock. But none of these enjoyments can compare with the enjoyment of the anointing oil. The anointing oil signifies that now the Triune God—the Father, the Son, and the Spirit—can reach His chosen and regenerated people to be one with them. This is much more than the Savior or the Redeemer typified by the lamb. It is also much more than the manna and the living water. This ointment typifies the Triune God—the very God in His divine Trinity—after a long process becoming the all-inclusive compound Spirit to reach us, to make us one with Him, and to make Himself one with us. How marvelous!

For centuries this wonderful matter of the compound ointment has been neglected by Christians. This is the reason there are not any hymns on this subject. However, it is easy to find hymns on the Passover. For example, one well-known hymn says, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” A number of hymns have been written about manna, and some deeper Christians have written hymns on the living water. But where can you find a hymn on the compound ointment?

When certain Christians hear us speak about the compound ointment, they may say, “What are you talking about? What is this—the Triune God after a long process becoming the all-inclusive compound Spirit? Can God the Spirit be compounded? And what do you mean by this Spirit reaching us? We know that on the day of Pentecost the Holy Ghost came upon the believers. But the Father remained on the throne with the Son beside Him. What is this you are saying about the Triune God reaching us to be one with us?” Who knows these things today? And who talks about them?

The error of the doctrine of the trinity has confused and befuddled many on this subject.
There is one God and one Lord.
The reason the spirit had not yet been given is because all things were not yet accomplished, Jesus had not been "seated" as yet.
Also, you do not distinguish between the gift of "holy spirit" and the Giver, God, who is "Holy Spirit".
There is Holy Spirit, God, and there is the gift, holy spirit, in each and every believer.
Furthermore, in almost every instance in the book of Acts, when a believer was filled with holy spirit, he/she, spoke in tongues.
The gift of holy spirit has 9 manifestations, not 9 "gifts", as is popular in secular Christian teaching.
Christians today have a tough time standing against the wiles of the devil, because they do not operate the manifestations of holy spirit within.

Why do you wish to severely limit the manifestations of the Holy Spirit to only nine? There is no bases for saying that only in nine ways is the Holy Spirit manifested.

The few manifestations that are mentioned in the epistles should only be thought of as representative. They are not an exhaustive list as in "These NINE and NO MORE."

That is worse than saints proposing the word "Trinity" to describe the mysterious three-one God.

You say rightly that there is ONE Lord. And I say Amen to this. There is one Lord.

And my Bible tells me of the ONE Lord here:

" ... One Lord, one faith, one baptism ..." (Eph. 4:5)

Praise the Lord for the ONE Lord.

Did you ever see the verse about "our Lord and ... His Christ" ?

So there is one Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ. And there is also "our Lord and ... His Christ" . Don't you just love the revelation of the Bible?

"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever." (Revelation 11:15b) .

So the phrase "Triune God" is quite useful to express this mystery. The one Lord Jesus Christ is also "our Lord and ... His Christ".

So the teaching of a "Trinity" is quite useful when rightly understood in light of the Bible.

And the manifestations of the Holy Spirit are far beyond only nine. The bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ (Phil.1 :19) should imply and inexhaustibly rich Holy Spirit able to furnish us in countless ways in countless manifestations.

Paul said that his gospel was of the "unsearchable riches of Christ" .

"To me, less than the least of all saints, was this grace given to annouonce to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ as the gospel." (Eph. 3:8 RcV)

The compounding of the Holy Anointing Oil in Exodus 30:

The Olive Oil represents the eternal Spirit of God. This Divine "Person" is eternal and He is called "the Eternal Spirit" (Heb. 9:14)

To the base of olive oil was added four spices in meaningful proportions.

    500 shekels of myrh

    250 shekels of fragrant cinnamon

    250 shekels of fragrant calamus

    500 shekels of cassia

Notice that there are three units of 500 but the middle unit is SPLIT in two making 250+250. We believe the significance is that the Second of the Three of the Triune God, the Son, was crucified (split) on the cross for man's redemption.

Four units (500, 250,250,500) speak of the creature. For four is so often a number signifying creation - ie. four winds, four corners of the earth, four living creatures.

Three times the number 500 suggests the Three of the Godhead - the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit.

The spices compounded with the olive oil speaks of the incarnation, life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God compounding His experience INTO the eternal Spirit to perfect a anointing Spirit to be anointed into man.

An anointing is a kind of rubbing or working or wroughting of a substance upon and into something else. God redeems sinners and to make them sons of God to be built up into His eternal living temple, works the Holy Spirit into them, anointing them.

Imagine anointing Vicks Vapor Rub into your chest when you have a cold. The circular action of going around and pressing in, going around and pressing in ... is something like the Holy Spirit working Jesus Christ into the being of the redeemed ones.

We will look at the actual spices soon. They are all significant of what Christ accomplished in His life, death and resurrection. These riches have been compounded into the eternal Spirit. And in this way "the last Adam BECAME a life giving Spirit" (1 Cor. 15:45)

The holy anointing oil was a compound of olive oil and four spices. It is a type of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the compound, all-inclusive, life-giving Spirit.

    The significance of the ingredients:

1.) Myrrh is a spice used in burial (John 19:39). Flowing myrrh signifies the precious death of Jesus.

IE. Romans 6:3 - "Or are you ignorant that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?"

His death is so precious to the believers.

500 shekels of flowing myrrh went into the compound.

2.) Fragrant cinnamon signifies the sweetness to us and effectiveness to us of Christ's death. By His death He also kills off all the negative germs of the fall in our beings. This killing power of Christ's death is sweet and effective to the Christian.

IE. Romans 8:13 - "For if you live according to the flesh, you must die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the practices of the body, you will live."

250 shekels of sweet cinnamon was added to the compound.

3.) Fragrant calamus comes from a reed which grew upward in a march or muddy place. This signifies the precious resurrection of of Christ. No muddiness of death could hold Him down. He rose and overcame all death.

IE. Eph. 2:6 - "And raised us up together with Him and seated us together with Him in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus."

Col. 3:1 - "If therefore you were raised together with Christ, seek the things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God."

1 Pet. 1:3 - "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us unto a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."

250 shekels of fragrant calamus went into the compound.

4.) Cassia was used in ancient times to repel snakes and insects. This signifies the power of Christ's resurrection.

IE. Phil 3:10 - " To know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death."

To pass through any kind of suffering, the Christian should first know the power of Christ's resurrection.

500 shekels was compounded into the mixture.

The olive oil as the eternal Spirit was the base. And compounded with this base was added the precious death of Christ, the effectiveness of His death, the resurrection of preciousness and the power of His resurrection. Satan and the demons are repelled by the sheer fragrance of this compound bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

In this way the last Adam became a life giving Spirit.

How would you explain that in John 20 the disciples were told to receive the Holy Spirit BEFORE Jesus was seated at the right hand of God ?

The explanation is that Jesus had already ascended to the Father and returned with the Holy Spirit to leave with the disciples.

I disagree. I believe he was instructing them on what to do when the spirit came on the day of Pentecost. BTW, it was phenomenon, when the cloven tongues appeared, then they remembered and "breathed in" to receive holy spirit and start speaking in tongues.

All those present, even from far away countries, receive the Holy Spirit at Pentacost, not just the disciples.

I don't think that is a good interpretation of John 20.

The life of God is mentioned repeatedly in John's Gospel. And the evangelist purposely wanted to portray, I believe, that first the disciples received the divine life to be born of God. The receiving of the Holy Spirit in John 20 was definitely the fulfillment of all of Christ's words about the Spirit of reality, the Another Comforter, the Holy Spirit in chapters 14-16.

What happened on Pentecost was the coming of the same Holy Spirit for power, for them to carrying out their preaching ministry. This was the promise of the Father in Luke 24:49

"And behold, I send forth the promise of My Father upon you; but as for you, stay in the city until you put on power from on high." (Luke 24:49)

The Pentecostal outpouring was the fulfillment of the promise of the Father to empower by cothing the disciples with the Holy Spirit. This was also the promise given in Joel 2:28-29. In Acts 1:4-5, 8; 2:1-4, 16-18 both Joel's prophecy and the promise of the Father met the beginning of fulfillment.

But before the Spirit came upon them in power they were born again by the resurrected Christ when He breathed into them the Holy Spirit for divine life.

This coming of the Comforter was accompanied by the Lord saying "Peace be to you" twice (John 20:19,21). The second time He said this:

"Then Jesus said to them again, Peace be to you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.

And when He had said this, He breathed into them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. "

He was indeed the Comforter, comforting them with the words of peace, and breathing the "Another Comforter" into them for their regeneration by divine life.

You know that the disciples stayed together for 10 days praying before the day of Pentecost came. I do not believe that these men and women could pray for ten days together without having the Holy Spirit within them.

    So -

1.) First, they received the Holy Spirit for divine rebirth, for life.

2.) Second, they received the outpoured Holy Spirit for power.

Jesus breathed Himself into the disciples on the evening of His resurrection.

"When therefore it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and while the doors were shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them, Peace be to you." (v.19)

They needed a lot of comforting. And the Comforter came into their midst first and then breathed Himself into them for their rebirth with divine life. So the Apostle Peter quite rightly pinpoints the regeneration to the event of Jesus Christ rising from the dead.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy as regenerated us unto a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." (1 Pet. 1:3)
