Is it because theists cannot accept the idea that humans can guide their own destiny without constantly referencing to a god?

There is even a Christian humanism movement:

Not true. What is there to fear? That humanity is being led by the machinations of man? That what we know to be true is defined by a mere product of time, chance and matter?

Why fear that? What's the worse that can happen? We annihilate ourselves?

Unfortunately this one was only deemed worthy of a 2 / 10 troll rating ... please try harder in future.

    Why?

Any time we try harder than that, all we hear in return is the sad old refrain: "Atheists don't believe in ANY gods, period." What a bunch of stick-in-the-muds.

    Fear and hatred?

No, just boredom. Complete and utter boredom.

So, so you think you can tell
    Heaven from Hell,
    Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
    From a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
    Your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war
For a leading role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
    We're just two lost souls
    Swimming in a fish bowl,
    Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found?
    The same old fears.
    Wish you were here.
