You give the pinnacle of the sports that only you play the title of 'World'.

MLB and NFL are very American, and a fine substitution for the world's most popular sport called "Trip and Ride the Stretcher". Or as you might call it, "footie".
MLB calls it a world series because the greatest players from around the world come to play in MLB... You should see my NL thread for my view on world baseball, because I kind of agree with you on the subject of World Series.
As for NFL, not sure how many players come from other parts of the world. I'm much more into MLB than NFL, but NFL is a great sport also, and the only other one I watch.
My understanding is that Basketball is very popular all over the world, but we play a tackle and run version. You can read my thoughts about that in the NL thread also.
