Only when you have to , and as if your life depended on it.

That's the point, though isn't it.
To fight properly takes practice, and most fights in club is under rules, and regulations. Getting beat up by a few blokes with bottles, takes a little sumthin sumthin.
Anyone who does Malaysian knife fighting will tell you exactly what is wrong with the clinch, as will a Taiji player. Clinch is good for one on one, but not so good when there are other factors. Grabbing the head and smashing it against concrete does three jobs....one, it takes the place of a good knee, two - it stops you having to get too close, and three - it prevents damage to your own body (as much as you can).
I always found that if you smoke...which I don't...but use something else...if you flip the cigarette...or whatever into their face right before the fight it gives you a quick open shot to the throat...curled knuckles into the throat and then you can walk on the person.

Has never failed me

Might give you the edge but won't beat a good ground worker.
