Argentina coach Diego Maradona has been banned from football for two months
by Fifa for his furious outburst after last month's victory over Uruguay.
Maradona, under pressure in the run-up to the match, directed an expletive-laden
tirade, broadcast on live TV, at reporters and critics after the game.

The 1-0 win ensured Argentina qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The ban will run from 15 November to 15 January 2010, which means he will miss
the World Cup draw on 4 December.

He could also miss a home international friendly against the Czech Republic
scheduled for 16 December at a so-far unspecified venue, though his role as coach
at the World Cup will not be affected.

Maradona, who attended the three-hour disciplinary committee hearing in Zurich,
    was also fined £15,000.

    ---

So, the man got away with it, with a laughable fine and a 2 month ban falling on
a time when there's no football duty for the man.

Is this a recognition by FIFA that they don't mind misbehavior as long as it ignites
media attention for their tourneys? The man spiced up the countdown to South
Africa, no doubt, though his way may be a shame for the sport.

A WC match ban is a big thing. I understand that Fifa don't want to make it that harsh, but then they should at least ban him from a few of the next qualifiers, for example. If Argentina dumps him between now and then, well, so be it. They might even dump him faster because of it.

    Yup.

I don't think he'll make it to the WC, though.

He's got away with everything he's ever done...
Why do officials persist in protecting the cheating, salad dodging, Fray Bentos munching, one-footed, fat bar steward?

    1986 will never be forgotton.

Diego Armando Maradona is a persistent thorn in every English football fans' side.
Personally, I think his 'Hand of God' was just his way at getting back at the English after we'd kicked their asses in The Falklands!

This^. FIFA recognizes that it's not about the sport, but the spectacle. Look no further than the changes that resulted in the current UEFA playoff match ups. There was no way on God's green Earth that FIFA was willing to risk France and Portugal having to face one another in a playoff tie. More specific to Maradonna, he'll generate a lot of buzz once the tournament starts, so FIFA slaps his wrist, snorts a line with him, and has a good laugh. The beast must be fed.

ah doesn't it make one feel good, probably one of the greatest sporting highlights of last century that goal!

the Angles can say nothing in this regard, for as Diego himself explained, they cheated also in a world cup final, against Germany in 1966, people on the pitch during the course of play and a goal that had not even crossed the line, blatant cheating if ever there was. He is a folk hero and i wish they would erect a statue in his honour, beside Robert Bruce and the Wallace monument in Stirling castle for services rendered to the Scottish nation!

He's a hero in Argentina because he's their greatest ever player in their national sport, and he won them the world cup.

He's a hero in Scotland because he once cheated against your next-door neighbours, and knocked them out of a competition they weren't going to win anyway.

Have you any idea how tragic that sounds? You must be seriously short of national heroes.

Get your facts right...the ball DID cross the line in 1966, and even if it hadn't te English players weren't trying to cheat, it would have been a mistake on the linesman's/referee's part.

    God save the queen
    The fascist regime
    They made you a moron
    Potential H-bomb

    God save the queen
    She ain't no human being
    There is no future
    In England's dreaming

Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
    There's no future, no future,
    No future for you

    God save the queen
    We mean it man
    We love our queen
    God saves

    God save the queen
    'Cause tourists are money
    And our figurehead
    Is not what she seems

    Oh God save history
    God save your mad parade
    Oh Lord God have mercy
    All crimes are paid

    When there's no future
    How can there be sin
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in your human machine
    We're the future, your future

    God save the queen
    We mean it man
    We love our queen
    God saves

    God save the queen
    We mean it man
    And there is no future
    In England's dreaming

    No future, no future,
    No future for you
    No future, no future,
    No future for me

    No future, no future,
    No future for you
    No future, no future
    For you
