It's very difficult to play 1. f4 against higher rated players. It works quite well against lower rated players but high rated players seem to know how to take advantage of it, which is why I am investing in looking into learning another opening as white to play against higher rated players. But I like quite unusual openings so I have to find something that suits.
I don't reccomend playing 1. f4 unless you have studied it before hand. It can get so messed up so easily for white.
