Round 2. Clan A challenges Clan C with a team of 10 players (not including any of the players who threw games in Round 1). If Clan A should happen to find itself with 6 wins and 4 games still undecided, then it takes the 6 wins and runs, throwing the remaining 4 games. Result: 6 more wins, and 4 more wolves in sheeps’ clothing.
Round 3. Clan A challenges Clan D with a team of 8 wolves in sheeps’ clothing. Result: 8:0 for Clan A.
Round 4. Repeat Round 1. with Clan E. Result: 6 more wins, 4 more wolves in sheeps’ clothing.
Round 5. Repeat Round 2. with Clan F. Result: 6 more wins, 4 more wolves in sheeps’ clothing.
Round 6. Repeat Round 3. with Clan G. Result: 8 more wins.
Repeat until championship is attained.
The above scenario is hypothetical. I am not accusing any clan of actually having carried out such a strategy with intent to manipulate the system. However, the fact that such a strategy is even possible shows that the current clan system, in which clan rank is determined by gross wins, is fundamentally flawed and that re-allocating points ad hoc will not fix what is wrong with it.
If clan rank were no longer pegged to gross wins, then such a recipe would fail. If clan rank where pegged instead to win ratio or net rating change, then there would be no advantage to be gained by throwing games, because every thrown game would not only deflate the individual player’s rating but also the clan’s rank thereby.
