You'll need to add the TextFX plug-in. (Plugins->Plugin Manager->Show Plugin Manager and install "TextFX Characters" ). Restart Notepad++, and you can get the word count of any block of selected text with TextFX->TextFX Tools->Word Count.
I already had Notepad++, so I just downloaded and installed the TextFX plugin. It works great.

Can I just say, as a regular poster here for 6-7 years, I always feel totally alienated by the annual Prose Competition, year after year. I've never ever considered entering. It always seems so cliquey, so General Forum. A whole bunch of GF people just start posting on the Culture Forum all of a sudden. They don't really engage anyone who posts there.
