I'm with you on that one. The drone of the beat plus bad lyrics leaves me cold. Musical it is, but in a devolutionary way. The Wagnerian aspiration for sprechtsingen surely did not have this in mind, but Debussy's Peleas et Melisande instead.

I'll grant you that, but it is still fairly undistinguished rap, not that there is any such thing, although Verdi does it in spots in Rigoletto for dramatic effect quite well. Hope your friend does well. I do like his manner of dress way better than the typical gangsta rapper's.
