It is about porn as a cultural manifestation and its value as culture in a given society.
The National University of Mexico, for example, has one of the the largest pornographic movie databases in the world (dating to past centuries) and it is often used by historians to determine attitudes of certain societies towards sex, censorship, etc.
Now with the increasingly liberalized world we live in, is porn still valuable as a source of social research? Has the (general) decrease of censorship substracted value from the porn film industry (both as a topic/tool of research and as a cultural manifestation)?

Basically that's it.
How about the Kama Sutra?
Is it erotica or porn?
This is what wikipedia says about it:
Kamasutra, (also Kama Sutra), is an ancient Indian text widely considered to be the standard work on love in Sanskrit literature. It is said to be authored by Mallanaga Vatsyayana. A portion of the work deals with human sexual behavior.
Ok, got something for you, but in Spanish. I'll translate.
The oldest porn film they have is "Le Coucher de la Marié", dating back to 1896 and filmed by Eugène Pirou. According to the experts, they presume there was a booming market for porn before 1904, with Paris as its hottest point. No pun intended.
And this is just regarding cinema. There's also printed porn which is even older.

Pornography is a respectable academic discipline. The only question is why academics privilege nasty porn, like Sade, over more conventional forms.

Which type of academics are you thinking here? Porn academia remings me of the Blue Oyster Bar.
