I have little doubt that this originates from a Medieval folk ballad. Simon likely adapted it in the same manner that troubadours have covered ballads such as “Barbara Allen” and Robert Burns’ “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose”.
These days we might say that he covered it, but since it’s in the public domain, he’s likely exempted f ...[text shortened]... eare taking literary licenses.
