Ooh ooh, nice. Abercrombie is a favourite of mine. If Abercrombie is an 8, Metheney is a 6 (on The Wishy Washy [But Good] Sound scoreboard). In terms of inner 6 string spirit - and not genre or chops, but voice speaking to me - for me there is a connection between John Abercrombie and Jerry Garcia.

So, thanks to ThinkOfOne reaching into my life and fiddling with my stereo, I am now listening to...

John Abercrombie Trio "Speak Of The Devil"

And if all goes to plan, it will be followed by...

John Abercrombie Quartet - "The Third Quartet" (2007)
Charles Lloyd (incl.Abercrombie) - "The Water Is Wide"

Abercrombie has certainly put out some nice albums. The funny thing is that, with the guitar not being one of my favorite instruments, the albums I've picked up are largely based on who else is playing on them. For example, I really like Feldman, Johnson and Baron, so have all of the albums with that quartet.

Bobo Stenson "Reflections", "War Orphans", "Serenity
Anders Jormin
Jon Christensen

Three really fine discs from a fine piano, bass, drums trio. These should be better known.

Check out the recent "Cantando" and the previous "Goodbye" (2005). If anything, what Stenson & crew do is even more distilled and precious.

What happened to the ubiquitous Jon Christensen? Did he pass away? I know there was a drink problem that started to affect his ability to play live.

I see that Bobo Stenson did something with Jan Garbarek. I will have to investigate, drat it.

I love Coltrane. For me, greatest jazzman ever.

"Goodbye" is another gem with Motian on drums. I've been reluctant to pick up "Cantando" because Fält is a complete unknown to me. Nice to hear a solid recommendation.

Don't know about Christensen. I haven't followed the music very closely the last several years.

I have really tried to get into Metheny but find his music a few small levels above elevator songs. The guy has some chops but his recordings are so, so boring.

The Third Quartet is really a terrific and interesting listen.
