The United States Government spent about 5,500,000,000,000 on Nuclear weapons during the Cold War. According to many historians, historians and scientists, the arms race could have been avoided if the US had told the USSR officially about the Manhattan project. If you were the president of the US, how would you invest that money?

And how could the arms race have been avoided by telling Stalin about the Manhattan Project?

If I had that money I'd waste half of it and invest the other half in women, premium coffee, brand name cigarettes, fast race horses and really really fast cars.

It is thought that Stalin took the fact that the US didn't tell him about the Manhattan project to mean that the US could not be trusted. There were various attempts by scientists to internationalize Uranium.

What about mansions?

That's rather ironic, coming from Stalin who was busy adding countries by the end of WWII. In any case, the Allies knew that Germany was working on nuclear weapons and assumed that Japan was privy to German research. I would think that each of the major countries assumed the others had "Manhattan Projects" underway.

Mansions? No, I'd just continue to live here on a gravel road in my little house and take care of my raccoons. And each evening when I logged onto RHP I'd post how many trillions I had left just so none of you would worry about my welfare.

(You can't believe what just happened! Before I posted this I took a drink of coffee and evidently a wasp had fallen into it from somewhere. I just got stung on my tongue! Used mouthwash. No terrible swelling or pain yet but it does hurt. God, what a creepy feeling. And yes, I spit it out instead of swallowing it.)

Wouldn't be pleasant.
Was it a dead wasp?
It's dead now. It was alive when I spit it out. Insects are a problem sometimes out here in the country. Lots of shrubs around the house and it's impossible to keep all of the bugs out of the house. I will definitely be checking my cofffee cup for quite some time to come now.

Why I'm sure ole Stalin himself said this. Obviously he'd have been just as happy as a clam to let the US have nukes and the USSR not had only we'd sent a quick memo.

Golly gee, if we'd only known.

The thing is that no one wanted to listen to Neils Bohr, because we had the monopoly. I'm sure that the Truman administration knew that the USSR wouldn't trust the US, but he underestimated the Russians, saying that they would never get the bomb.

If I was the President of the USA I'd be too busy imposing foot-operated handtaps on the world by dint of military force to be worried about trivial details like that.
