We tax income but don't demonize it. We tax property but don't demonize it. Taxation is not demonization. If anything I feel like tax dollars for property going to local schools and infrastructure is contributing to a collective interest in where your taxes are going and funding.

Here you have a laborer with a great work ethic building retaining walls in the 100 degree h ...[text shortened]... roperty as a contribution to social programs and safety nets that keep folks out of extreme poverty.
Wow. Could you do a separate thread on safety net, the definition thereof, and who, other than the 40M destitute citizens,, would qualify to fall into the net? A cool thread I would think, and for the record, I think that today, we should totally support the 40M.

Your first para above is of course right on, who would argue that?!!? But then you go off on a laborer. Or you could go up a notch to used car salesman, or up to a plumber with 3 employees. Uh oh, bad example,,,if he has 10 employees, he may end up rich with the pool you speak of!!!. While the plumbers plumb!.
I hate it Wildgrass, but Econ 101 just deep-sixed your paragraph 2 above.....or actually, you did. Some people make more money than others, Wildgrass. Some start with nothing and end up rich. Some are more successful, some are losers, some inherit. Do you want to kill all the inheritors???
Next para, you say a wealthy man's assets/money should be taxed, although it was already taxed once when he got it. What if it is taxed at stock value, and after the tax, the value of that stock drops? Can he get a refund? I could shoot these holes all day. Your idea is ludicrous. But, Eliz Warren likes the idea.
But I really start feeling a bit chilly, brrrrrrr, when you want 'contributions to social programs, and (those) safety nets". How bout support the poverty stricken (please put me on the Board) and settle it that way? We have enough for that without hitting up the successful. That is who you are after, Wildgrass, the successful. You should re-think that.
But, there is no demonization of taxes, etc. Its been going on for 10,000 years. And it works!!
Please do a safety net post, Marauder has mentioned one before.

@AverageJoe1
Speaking of killing the inheritors, can we Kill All the Leafblowers!?!!??! Geez, they run in my neighborhood all the time. I don't want to talk about it!

You are correct, I of course know the tax law is screwed up. I know trump is screwed up. I am not so far off course. But, we conservatives keep hearing 'fair share', or 'tax the rich', but no one ever says how much. That is all we are asking.
Problem is, if you hit them for 95%, which you certainly would do, the return would cover about 29 hours of running this coun ...[text shortened]... society. Do we not need Jeff Bezos? (Speaking hypothetically or course, he does not 'own' Amazon.)
A 96% taxation rate?? Who’s suggesting that?

What people are suggesting is that the rich shouldn’t be able to use loopholes and that companies like Amazon have to pay their fair share of taxes (which at the moment they do not).

I pay something between 38 and 50% tax on my income (depending if it’s salary or bonus things like Xmas pay-outs).
I personally don’t see why the little extras have to be taxes so high, but hell, I have 10 weeks paid vacation a year, I ain’t complaining.

If someone’s working in a McDonalds, surely that level of taxation would be unjustified. Or if you’re only able to work part-time.
You have to be able to afford housing, food, clothes, holidays, etc.

So, someone who works 8 hour shifts in an amazon warehouse takes home 1700 euro’s a month. The owner of amazon makes a billion a month and prances about with his penis-shaped rocket ship, instead of working.
The only thing the two have as a similarity is that neither get proper bloody toilet breaks.

In which world should they be taxed evenly?

Is your answer: the masses should just starve or go without a home?
How come US society is so violent compared to Western-European society?

Don’t you think there’s a connection there?

Isn’t that the same though?
Maybe but I didn’t mean it to 🤔
I’m thinking accountable in the monetary sense rather than responsible in the moral or criminal sense. Maybe I should have used culpability rather than responsibility.
We cannot help who we descend from but we should try to ameliorate the ongoing effects of historical policies that our forebears profited from, especially if we as a society, nation or individual are still, to some extent profiting, like say the royal family or some ‘old money’ family in the US. I’m sure the UK as a nation owes much of its present day economy to profits made from slavery and the exploitation of resources it plundered from it’s imperial past.

"Under the plan, companies with at least $1 billion in profits — about 200 publicly traded corporations — would no longer be able to escape income taxation altogether. The 15 percent minimum tax would also bring the United States into compliance with the standard recently set by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to try to root out tax havens." https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/26/us/politics/democrats-billionaires-tax.html

Taxing billionaires is not easy. The following article details why this is so without your misplaced right wing misinformation. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/30/business/how-to-tax-billionaires.html

Personally, I believe the proposal to force banks to reveal to the IRS more information on personal accounts is a good idea. It would be great to grab taxes the wealthy are illegally hiding. No new tax law would be required. Just make it harder for them to hide their taxable wealth. This seems fair to me. Conservatives are always screaming about Welfare Queens but it seems they feel it is justified for the rich to avoid paying taxes they legally owe.

‘Twas I sald 95%, y’all refuse to say how much it should be, so I just threw it out there. My point being that even that would not be enough to handle the country budget for a day.
You Say ‘taxed evenly’ when in the USA there is a sliding scale, so we don’t do that here. The rich pay a higher percentage than the average man, and the rich pay the bulk of the taxes in this country. Of course, you are correct the tax system needs an overhaul. But No one ever says how much the Rich should pay on this forum. I myself have no idea what fair share means.

Next, I’ll You say. “You have to be able to afford housing, food etc”. Of course that is a given. But, In the USA, liberals think that such necessities be provided by the government with no questions asked. And What do you mean starve, and go without a home? You say that is the order of the day? Where? We are covered up with entitlement programs. I just don’t get you there.

I agree, to root out tax evaders. Do all we can, but not step over the line of rights of privacy. We sre of course, a Nation of laws.

I fo fret that were libs to have their way, the Golden Goose parable would find us in a resl mess.
We sure are lucky that the Libs did not jump on Thomas Edison the Wright brothers and maybe even more importantly Henry Ford. They would not have had enough money to get this nation on its feet. I guess we would all still be on horseback. If y’all get rid of musk, we will still be driving around in fossil fuel vehicles. One of the funniest concepts is a liberal thinks that a guy like musk should be able to get along fine with a couple billion dollars. Sounds silly, but it really just does not work that way

Noone is talking about getting rid of billionaires or destroying corporations. As for privacy, you should not be free to hide behind "privacy" to cheat on taxes. Taxes pay for the infrastructure that enabled Musk and others to build their businesses.

The Washington Examiner is very right wing journal with mixed ratings for accuracy. Not to be trusted.
The Tax Policy Center is part of the left leaning Brookings Institute.
Biden is a middle of the road compromiser. If the tax plan raises 1.5 trillion while making some of the wealthy even richer and doing little damage to the uber rich, that's a real win.

UK? Romania! You libs must sure have wires crossed in your brains.

BTW I will be at an art show Fri night , crawling with libs. Any tips on secreting my wallet away from them.

@Mott-The-Hoople
But it was WAY ok for the super rich to send millions to your GOD KING though, right?
Or the FOUR MILLION sent to Trump by a foreign government? And Trump not mentioning it in the legally required paperwork?

So tell me, how many millions did Biden get from oh, who, China? Iran?
