Coming out of a pandemic one would expect excess deaths to go down, the wuflu comes along and bowls a lot of people, especially those nearly there anyway, then in the ensuing years excess deaths should go into the negatives.

If they could attribute the number to car crashes, murders, obesity, smoking or even the wuflu we'd normally never hear the end of such an increase. (In NZ a single, so-called, wuflu death was front page news).
There'd be a publicity campaign at the end of which there'd the usual calls for new regs (lower speed limits, higher tax on tobacco products, tax on fatty food, warning labels, forced participation in medical experiments, the wearing of pointless, useless face nappies, etc) ) or the creation of a new goobermint buratcracy. Instead they just want it to go away.
