I found them annoying myself. It felt like a husband trying to write from the perspective of the fantasy version of his idealized wife. It felt unnatural somehow.
It might be more sci-fi than fantasy but I'm still amazed that noone has mention the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman. Other than those I've always like the narnia books and the few discworld novels I've read I really enjoyed as well.
