I have to disagree there. Shannara is almost a direct ripoff of the Lord of the Rings which are a classic but were never among my favorites; The plot felt predictable and I never liked his treatment of dwarves.

The movie did a horrific job with the Dwarves, and yes, he was a silly little man to laugh at in the movie. But the books don't have that crap.
Originally posted by TyrannosauruschexTrue, but the 7,8, and 12, in my opinion all among the to four of the series along with 6, should really be renamed "Final Sci-fi"
What about final fantasy, that could well be one of the best fantasy story series of all time.
Bookwise it would have to be "The Malazon Book of the Fallen" by Stephen Erikson. Imense plot, good characterisation and incredible plot. The one real weakness is that many of the characters are somewhat samey.
Originally posted by TyrannosauruschexPart seven (7). The best of all. I don't know to many movies or books that "play out" like part 7. For its time it was the best story written, simple as that.

Originally posted by NinjaKnightFalse, 8 was the best ever written in terms of storyline and enjoyability. 7 was just the hook that got people into the series.

Anyhoo lets discuss a more enjoyable series...
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. When is a Dance with Dragons finally going to come out and which major players will bite the dust?

Never read Martin.
I think the point being missed is the "what is the best series of books" as there are many examples of a series of books which start of very well e.g. Shannara, Dune, The Tales of Gor (If anybody remembers them) and Dragon lance series to name but a few but start to become stale and predictable towards the end. Of the books series mentioned I've read nearly all of them so for the best Series surely it must be between LOTR and the Discworld series.
