You do realise that our infrastructure (in Western Europe) is far more advanced than that in the US, don't you?
Where I live we don't even have gas. We have electricity (that's this power that comes out of the walls, believe it or not) and city heating (rest warmth from power plants gets pumped through pipes and the houses use that to warm the heaters and the water).
Many houses now have solar panels, to lower electricity costs.
Wood is only used as a luxury or for aesthetics.
