An unselfish leader would abide by the group's decision.
Having a selfish leader leads to the false communism personality cult you speak of.
But yes, this is how communism is corrupted. It may never work in reality, no matter how well meant. Perhaps an unselfish leader would also result in a switch to democracy, turning it into non-communism yet again.
