read norman spinrad and you will see why i spell amerika for now at least.
and i really really wasn't trying to bait anyone, just provoke a civilized debate where everyone is right.
i believe that that patriot was right. they were trying to get rid of one tyrant and didn't need to trade tyrants. not to mention the americans were in fact english, fren ...[text shortened]... llowed to intervene to stop oklahoma kids to come out stupid from their state's schools?
The elegance of the American system of government is the system of checks and balances ... although it may not appear so, everything rights itself in due course
As for the State of Oklahoma, that too shall right itself, either the law will be changed in the legislature or by the courts. Or maybe, thats what the people of Oklahoma want... in a democracy, isn't the will of the majority paramount?
To extend your logic, why have a elected President or Congress? All Americans would vote on every proposed piece of legislation , cut out the middleman. But then all we ever be doing here is voting, but it be a true democracy ..... or utter chaos

Has anyone considered that the US should change the way they run things? This stuff about "I vote for a person that will vote for a person to be the president"
Or the fact that states have the right to have their own laws which often are stupid and often violate the interests of the country as a whole? (See the Oklahoma bill thread)
Or the fact that i ...[text shortened]... opose things to be changed and propose how, or offer arguments why amerika shouldn't change.

the will of the nation would oppose laws that are beneficial only to a state and harmful for others.

I actually remember sitting on a college lawn the day after September 11 and making the very point to a few still shocked fellow students, that whoever was responsible for the atrocity wouldn't matter in the long run, because in one fell swoop the US had found a perfect invisible enemy, that it could now wage war against forever. Having spent the Soviets into early retirement, they had desperately needed a new evil to juxtapose their good guy role, and it seemed that they had now been delivered an enemy that they could always use as a pretext to fight any war or strip their citizens of any or even all of their long held freedoms.
It is, though, up to you to draw your own conclusions. And remember the conclusions of the Nuremberg trials whilst you’re doing this: Standing by and watching is a form of guilt and “just obeying orders” is no longer and excuse!
But that may have just been the shock and disbelief of the moment.

I totally agree with this. Usually, I don't respond to posts I agree with, but
I had to say I agree with this. The government should be servicing the
people and not the other way around.
With todays technology it should be possible to give the people a chance
to follow the political events both locally, nationally and on an
international level, and ...[text shortened]... to the
public, so that those who are interested can make informed decisions.
I think. 😕

There should always be certain ground laws upheld by a law inforcement
serving the people that will protect the basic rights of any minority, such as
the right to lead your life according to your own culture and religious belief,
as long as that in turn don't infringe on other people's rights to the same.
But, yes, majority rule is the way to go, as long as such a system is in place.
I think. 😕

argument that one nation has nukes so the next must also have them to
"equal" the "playing" field. It's human nature not to trust the other after
all. But to make informed decisions, people must know all there is to
know on a given issue.
If what you fear is that your enemy will figure out how to harm you, think
no further. One, don't make enemies. Two, even when such information
is kept in a relatively small group it obviously leaks out to the "enemies"
sooner or later, so it's futile trying to keep secrets. Just the fact that a
bunch of people feel the need to "classify" certain information, tells me
everything I need to know about them and the information they
"classify". Three, being one of the "few" who has access to this
"classified" information gives an enormous amount of power over
everyone else. This is completely unacceptable if you're to say you're part
of the same team.
You may be happy about being kept in the dark on issues so serious that
they in fact threaten national security and the like. You may even be
happy with the very likely possibility that these issues are in fact not real
but a way for a privileged bunch of geezers to maintain a position of
power and control over the rest. I'm not.
