When I think about christmas its either with joy or pain. Some Christmas's are fun others are a thorn in the heart.

Is there such a thing as a so-so Christmas or is it always one of the extreams

You are looking at Christmas through how you view certain people. It
is always people, inside and outside of the church, inside and outside
of the faith. God has to deal with people and He is using people
to reach other people, with that you also get people who like the band
wagon, but want nothing to do with the real thing. You have people
who see it as a means to an end, with the end being power, money,
position and so on.
If I was to give any advice, I'd bypass the people and go strait to the
source, Jesus Christ Himself. Since I cannot prove Him to you and He
is quite alive and well and able to respond to an honest prayer. In my
opinion that is always the best place to start, go to the source when
ever possible.
