I have had a bit of a debate with my girlfriend, and I feel it is only proper to settle it by circumventing media propaganda, and asking you, the people of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland -

If you were required to vote either for, or against the monarchy (obviously won't happen) would you vote for the royal family to continue in their capacities, or would you vote to abolish the monarchy?

Any additional commentary on why my question is naive, in either direction is also welcome. I live in the Republic of Ireland, so we see your television, but are not familiar with the United Kingdom's actual views on this particular question.

Thanks...

I'm British although now live in OZ...... but I would currently vote to keep them. Although they should be accountable for their actions, so tighter control...... maybe performance reviews, KPI's, annual votes 😀

I'd get rid of them. You can argue about the pros and cons, but the bottom line is that I can't agree with an unelected head of state.

When I was younger I was a staunch republican, but now I have a soft spot for lizzie, charlie and co and say keep them.

Although if there was another civil war I'd still be a parliamentarian and have their heads off.

I would vote to keep them, although without heaps of research into their charity work (and even then it might be tenuous at best), I wouldn't have the faintest as to argue why they are important to us -- national pride and tradition is all I have, but I'm not sure if they'd stand up in court...

I would not willingly vote for the abolition of our history and tradition.

Morally the monarchy is wrong ( Sarah ferguson's toe job being a prime example).

The alternatives are no better. The current incumbent is pretty special so I would only vote for abolition providing a suitable substitute was agreed to.

President Brown does not appeal.

But the advantage, of course, is that you wouldn't have to vote for him. I've never quite understood why this sort of argument (used to be 'President Blair'😉 is seen by some people to be a clincher. If we don't want someone as president, then we can elect someone else instead.

I'd have absolutely no objection to a member of the current royal family standing for election as an elected head of state.

Keep them! They are part of our national identity, not something that should be thrown out after the centuries of history, politics and conflict that have got us to where we are now...

At least the unelected Monarch can keep a check on the likes of Toniblair and Broon.
