Is cosmopolitanism a thin semantic venner for neo-liberal/colonial activities or is it the spread of humanitarianism?

i dont know, what i do know is that London is often described as a cosmopolitan city and there is a lot less ghettoisation and more racial harmony in my experience than in other parts of the UK. I guess thats a good thing right?

yea, but I was talking more about a global scale, such as globalisation being seen has inhabiting a cosmopolitan morality, is this just a whitewash to hide the hegemony of the West and its global economy?

But globalisation has allowed the Indian and Chinese economies to grow at huge rates and helping to lift people in those countries out of poverty. It is also having a detremental effect on western economies as manufacturing and other jobs are being outsourced to asian and eastern european countries, the US is builiding up a huge trade deficit with China. While it has certainly benefited the west as the price of goods has dropped, its also helping the other economies develop.

Culturally? well thats a bit different and there is a westernisation of certain cultures but i think also that if an indigenous culture is strong it will still survive. India for example seems to be fusing western influences with its own culture rather effectively.

Believe me, relations between different "ethnic minorities" in London are not that great.
speaking of which actually, there was an article in the Telegraph about a muslim girl from Newham, UK who ran off to india to marry a Hindu she met on the internet. They quoted her father as saying that he was more upset about the fact that she had married a hindu rather than the fact that she had lied or run away!! that kind of atttitude worries me greatly.

I wouldn't say so. I have an Indian friend at college who went home over the summer and was disgusted by what he saw in New Delhi. There is "a KFC on every corner" and the Indian youth have been poisoned by our Western materialism. They've become like kids here, always after the latest mobile phone or clothes or whatever. He's bcome really disaffected by it, to the point of saying that he no longer has any culture that he calls his own. He's fifteen.

I am wondering lately if increasing urbanisation necessarily creates a materialistic culture. Any thoughts? Or is this just a phenomenon of the cultures of the richest countries spreading cancerously with globalisation?

But thats just ruse, yes China and India are now consumerist, economically growing entities but what about all the other countries within the 'non-West', how are they doing economically?!

Globalisation is the spread of capitailsim which in turn causes a Western ego-centred materialism.
