Chess players like to argue. Religion and politics are the frequent topics of "discussion" here. What two better things to argue about.

Because there are a lot of superstitious religious nutcases on here and us right-thinking people have to put them right on one or two issues.

There are also a lot of bigoted, self center ego maniacs out there
to who think they know it all. Besides religion is a topic people not only
think they know about, they care about it. If you find other topics
where people care to debate you will see the debates. It isn't a
character flaw that causes these debates it is simply a matter of
people caring enough and are willing to take the time to debate.
Ask yourself this how many other boards do you hang around in and
why? It is because it interests you.

I think the interest thing is part of it KJ (I hope you don't mind me calling you KJ) I also think there is something else. I see that religon is on the wane in many areas. Mostly the rich/well educated areas. Not all of them, and I'm not saying that once you educate people they don't need/want to subscribe to religon anymore. But I do think that as science answers many of lifes questions (Why does the sun come up every morning? How come the crops failed? Why do these two bits of metal stick together? What can I do to live longer? How was the earth made? How can I play chess with someone on the other side of the world without waiting a week for their move?) the power that religous organisations can exert is reduced. You may view this as a bad thing (and I respect your opinion, hell I even understand it, most religions are based on being nice to people, I can see why that's good) but, and let me explain, a lot of athiests (or anti-thiests, myself included) see this as a good thing. I'll leave the arguement about why we should think this for a later date, it's not my point. This is: there are people out there who haven't made up their minds, there are people who have made up their minds but are suceptible to persuasion. (It turns out that wasn't my point, but this is now I promise) We want to convince them. We see persuading people of the non-existence of god as a positive thing. (I got there in the end)
This is why I am active on the debates thread (not as active as I'd like) and I'll bet that it is why many others are as well. I don't just want to tell you (all) about my antitheism, I want to persuade you because I really believe the world would/will be a better place without religon and I see an oppertunity to bring this a little closer.

Also it takes my mind off how far my rating has fallen.
