"Trump holds up coronavirus aid to block Democrats' bid for election funding"

Democratic U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries wrote on Twitter: “It’s now clear. The effort to destroy the Post Office is part of a continuing conspiracy to steal the election.”

The Republican president has been railing against mail-in ballots for months as a possible source of fraud, although there is little evidence it takes place and millions of Americans - including much of the military - have used the post office to cast absentee ballots for years.

Trump said his negotiators have resisted Democrats’ calls for additional money to help prepare for presidential, congressional and local voting during a pandemic that has killed more than 165,000 Americans and presented severe logistical challenges to organizing large events like the Nov. 3 election.

“The items are the post office and the $3.5 billion for mail-in voting,” Trump told Fox Business Network, saying Democrats want to give the post office $25 billion. “If we don’t make the deal, that means they can’t have the money, that means they can’t have universal mail-in voting.”

Democrats have cried foul, accusing Trump and his party of trying to make it harder for Americans to vote, as opinion polls show him trailing his Democratic rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.

“This is an assault on our democracy and economy by a desperate man who’s terrified that the American people will force him to confront what he’s done everything in his power to escape for months: responsibility for his own actions,” said Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates.

"the US is not a democracy" someone will remind you soon.

McConnell constantly blocks anything the House comes up with and Trump can appoint his lackeys to all kinds of offices. Separation of powers is for euro sissies.

Unless Trump succeeds in destroying the Post Office.

@vivify
I think he won't. Congress is who does money for PS not Trump. He can't stop that AND the PM general is being investigated from crimes. I hope he fries.

I think his goal is to have a lot more in person voting? Not sure.

Trump has been railing against mail-in ballots for months as a possible source of fraud, although millions of Americans - including much of the military - have cast absentee ballots by mail for years without such problems.

It has never occurred anywhere on this scale -- where we are expected to have this volume of people. Who knows what the election will even look like when it could entail weeks of counting behind the scenes if we maximize the amount of mail in ballots.

By discouraging more & more funding for it, he can encourage the states to facilitate more in-person voting, which is ultimately more convenient and secure, and would also facilitate the process.

It could also be considered quite a waste of money -- 2.5 billion? Didn't they just say in this article that 1/4 of Americans voted by mail in ballot in last election? Why would such a gigantic amount needed to be added to facilitate voting?

What we are really looking at is...

- A simple difference in vision about how the election should be carried out
- The left setting up the next narrative for delegitimizing Pres. Trump's second term.

Because when there's Trump, there's always gotta be one of those.

You seem to forget there's a pandemic going on.

We have a fascist dictator , that is the fact .
The Republicans are enabling the fascist dictator in all he does .
We need a countrywide campaign to vote early .
I have voted early for the past 25 years and I pick times when few are voting .
Vote early , vote early ,vote early !
Vote out the fascists !!!!

We have the same pandemic going on in South Korea and have exceedingly few transmissions, in spite of getting it much earlier than anyone, and honestly are not practicing much social distancing. Churches are in service, schools are open; people are even attending sporting events again, though of course with social distancing measures in place.

During the whole time, I have been riding the subway during rush hour and eating at restaurants, even buffets on occasions.

The big difference is that everyone wears a mask.

To me, this has been the most effective means of stopping the spread.

But I do not know.

I think, though, that you can have the election with people voting in person if they are masked.

Longer voting booth opening hours would make a huge difference to safe voter turnout. Is it possible to extend the voting to several days?

Sure. Or just allow postal voting. It’s not more susceptible to fraud than physically voting. No matter what trump says.

The true problem with the voting in the US is the drive to ban certain groups of people from participating in the election and gerrimandering.

Do you say that to the protestors?
Nope, you don’t.
For your hypocrisy it is ok for “urbanites” to mass up and yell at the world because they suck at life but standing in line to vote is too dangerous?
You reek of hypocrisy 🤮

I suppose standing in line to buy some groceries is too dangerous also?

Vote Up
Vote Down

The protesters far and away wore masks.

I live in a red state. There is no way in hell I'm standing in line with a bunch of mouth breathers panting on me.

Do you wear a mask when you go out in public?
