This was so predictable; one China two systems would not work. The Chinese Communist Party is shutting down the free press in HK.

What a shame, the Communist Party feels so threatened by the free expression of opinion and views any criticism as treason.

WHY DOES CHINA NEED HONG KONG AS IT IS?
Under the ‘one country, two systems’ formula agreed as part of Britain’s handover of the territory to China, Hong Kong is guaranteed liberties which are unavailable on the mainland.
These freedoms give Hong Kong a special status internationally, allowing it to negotiate trade and investment agreements independently from Beijing -- for instance, it does not have to pay the tariffs that the United States is imposing on Chinese imports.
They also mean foreign investors have more faith in Hong Kong’s legal and governance systems. China’s legal system is accountable to the Communist Party.
China uses Hong Kong’s currency, equity and debt markets to attract foreign funds, while international companies use Hong Kong as a launchpad to expand into mainland China
In short, the freedoms under "One Country, Two Systems" allows Hong Kong to be a cash-cow for China. However, as China's economy continues to grow, their reliance on Hong Kong diminishes, and China has less and less qualms about breaking their agreement.
@moonbus saidYes it was predictable and quite shameful of the CCP.

The same is happening to Taiwan too, unfortunately. I think for Hong Kong and Taiwan, their days
of being free of goo-goo totalitarian rule are coming to a sad end, unless Democratic nations
step up to protect them, especially Taiwan.
@earl-of-trumps saidYes, I agree. Taiwan is certainly on Beijing’s agenda for annexation.

The post that was quoted here has been removedYou're lying. Your question wasn't in the context of a rhetorical; you were genuinely looking for an answer to your "24 years" question, as evidenced by you alleging that if even if it were "2047", westerners would still criticize China for breaking their agreement.
Duchess is just embarrassed at her cognitive frailty in criticizing me for simply answering a question she clearly wanted to an answer to.
