The insurrectionists in the mob were a side show. They were chanting hang Mike pence specifically because they were mad that he wasn't going to help them with the coup. They drafted and signed slates of electors that disagreed with state certified election results and court opinions. The plan was to use these documents and mike pence's purely ceremonial role in elections to declare trump the winner of an election he clearly lost. These events are how soft coups happen. This one was unsuccessful.

However, they were GROSSLY outnumbered and surrendered to the insurrectionist mob to prevent bloodshed.
