Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched in Georgia's capital Tbilisi on Monday to demand EU membership for the former Soviet republic in the Caucasus.
Waving European and Georgian flags, an estimated 60,000 demonstrators gathered in front of the Georgian parliament, days after the European Commission recommended waiting before granting Tbilisi candidate status.
Several pro-European organisations and all the opposition groups had called for a "march for Europe" on Monday evening in Tbilisi, in order to "prove the commitment of the Georgian people to their European choice and to Western values".
While the European Commission gave a positive opinion on Ukraine and Moldova, it said on Friday that Georgia must first carry out political and other reforms before it can qualify for the status.
"It is up to Georgia to accelerate (the reforms) and move towards this open door," commented Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
@sonhouse saidI think we're getting too comfortable assuming NATO will always work in our favor.
@vivify
Now let's get them in NATO....
As the single most powerful alliance in the history of planet earth, the potential for evil is pretty damn high. All we need is a few shady but charismatic leaders in the right circumstances and NATO can be devastating. And this behemoth only grows larger over time.

@shavixmir
Well, at least the Poles gave Zelinski a bunch of weapons to fight off the barbarians.

@sonhouse saidYou know that I disagree with waging a war by proxy.

There were far better means and options for tackling the Russian invasion.
Russia will not win. And if there was no fighting, they still wouldn’t win.
Now, in return, there are thousands of dead, the whole infrastructure of Ukraine is demolished, the world market’s gone down the drain, Africa’s starving and every despot East bloc madhouse wants to join the EU.
So, everyone loses. Not just Russia.
Moronity at it’s finest, just because of machoism.

@shavixmir saidPlease give us a rough outline of this far better no fighting strategy that wins against an authoritarian regime that’s intent on wiping you off the map as sovereign country and setting up ‘filter camps’ so they can ‘denazify’ your civilians. I’m sure the Ukrainians and the UN await your plan with baited breath.

@vivify saidBy right places I take it you mean the White House or the Pentagon. NATO is not a community of equals.

Given we have no idea how badly China and Russia would be conducting themselves if the democracies that make up NATO had to hold the line without US military forces and especially the nuclear umbrella it provides I prefer the democratic devil I know.
A member state has to be attacked by outside force before article 5 can be activated.
@sonhouse saidNo, he seems to be interested only in pro-Russian territories near it's border. Putin doesn't want all of Ukraine just the areas that seem to back reunification. I doubt he wants the entire Ukraine or all of Georgia. That could be a continuous fight against rebels.
@vivify
Do you agree his ultimate goal is to rebuild the old Soviet empire?
@kevcvs57 saidSurrender in protest.

Get international pressure going.
Non-compliance and resistance (think walk-outs, strikes, etc.).
Internationally, instead of sending money for weapons and weapons, do something far more constructive with those funds.
There are tons of measures that could be taken, which would have preserved the infrastructure, saved lives, etc.
Now the country is a wasteland. There are God only knows how many thousands of dead, etc.
So what did Ukraine win? Nothing. Nothing but death and destruction.
"Pick your battles" is the saying that springs to mind.
Now the Ukraine controls nothing but wasteland. And nobody knows how long the situation will last. What the end situation will be like. Or how long it will take to rebuild after the Russians have lost.
Roughly the same as the first points I make. But then without infrastructure, political structure and loads of dead and seriously inujured people.
I've told you all this before. You don't care. Anything to boost your machoism, even when you know that it's going to end with burnt babies, charred mothers and rotting cadavers.
@vivify saidThe EU granting candidate status to the Ukraine is a joke:

"European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said in the case of Ukraine that "we all know that Ukrainians are ready to die for the European perspective, we want them to live with us, the EU".
She praised the country's pre-war reforms to tackle corruption, curb the influence of oligarchs and strengthen the rights of minorities although she noted that "we want to see results on the ground"."

That is almost comical misinformation; even before the war, the Ukraine was jailing political opponents of the regime, shutting down opposition newspapers, passing discriminatory legislation against its Russian minority and increasing police surveillance and power to spy on its own People.
Georgia is at least as deserving of candidate status as the Ukraine if the EU took its qualifications seriously which they obviously do not.
@vivify saidThat was an illegitimate use of NATO but let’s not pretend NATO invaded Libya, they used force to enable the Libyan people to defend themselves against a dictator who seemed intent crushing descent with extreme force.
Tell that to Libya.
Gaddafi had been supplying weapons and explosives to terrorist groups for years so I guess what goes around comes around huh.
To pretend NATO invaded Libya in the same sense that Russia has invaded Ukraine is disingenuous to say the least.
