Jared Loughner went to the Sportsman’s Warehouse outlet in Tucson, Ariz., on Nov. 30 to purchase a Glock 19 semiautomatic handgun, a background check was performed and he came up clear.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head by Loughner and Giffords has made statements in support of background checks, but a background check did not prevent Loughner from buying a firearm.

Mark E. Kelly, gun-control proponent and husband to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, recently purchased an AR-15 (an "assault weapon," he called it)—which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.

Are Giffords and Kelly in a good position to call for the restriction of gun rights?

They are pure hypocrites, like the deceased news editorialist Carl Rowan, who routinely did anti gun rants, but when his home was invaded, shot the intruder in Washington, DC where guns at the time were illegal to own.

Why are they hypocrites? they are calling for tighter controls, not an outright ban, i.e the sort of controls that might have discovered that Loughner had a mental illness.

A court has to register him as mentally ill. How would they have discovered his mental illness with tighter gun controls if he is not registered as such?

I thought He was on medication, access to medical records would help, no system is going to be perfect though, some will get through the idea is to reduce the risks not eliminate them.

I'm all for improving background checks if it can be done in a practical way. I don't think access to medical records is practical. This could compromise honesty to a doctor and have the opposite effect intended.

I don't think Jared Loughner was on any medications at all. He has been fighting forced medication since his arrest.

In the UK some ailments have to be reported to the vehicle licensing authority if it will affect the sufferers ability to drive.

Seems cumbersome but the first step is a central register which gun sellers and doctors can access.

Gifford and Kelly have been lifelong gun grabbers, just a part of their being Democrats. Tighter controls on whom? The problem isn't the 99.999% of gun owners who never do anything wrong with their guns. New laws will effect them.

The nut jobs, mentally ill, and criminals will still get their guns the way they do now, on the black market. They may end up getting them from Eric Holder and Barrack Obama.

If the confidentiality of the physician is undermined, that would just stop people from going for treatment.
