Turkey has rolled out a nationwide scheme to stop and weigh people in public, with inspectors then telling them to slim down if they are found to be overweight. Health workers have been deployed across each of the country's 81 regions with weighing scales and tape measures as the drive to assess 10 million people by July 10 is underway.

Passersby are stopped by medical examiners for spot body mass index (BMI) checks while walking through town squares, shopping centres and parks, and even as they prepare to board buses or head to football matches, according to reports. Speaking at a nursing conference last week, Turkey's Minister of Health Kemal Memişoğlu declared that '50 percent of our society is overweight.'

He pointed to the various health risks associated with being overweight, telling the meeting: 'Being overweight means being sick, it means we will get sick in the future. 'Our young children are overweight, their body resistance is high and that's why they don't get sick, but when they start getting older, that weight will turn into joint and heart diseases.'

But Memişoğlu was not spared the scales in Ankara last week - and was told by health officials that he was among the large proportion of the population counted as 'above normal weight'. 'Which dietitian should I go to?' he reportedly said afterwards, before adding in a follow-up post on Thursday: 'Turns out I'm a little over. It's up to me now, I'll be walking every day.'

@Rajk999
Funny!
Should put the scales outside all fast-food restaurants and if they don't pass, they can't order anything but a salad.

Yeah, and there will be court cases with fat people suing the state even though it is for their own benefit. I think America is one of the most obese nations in the world.

Here's the list, the middle eastern countries surpassing the US were a surprise.

"Fat" chance, lol.

Barack Obama tried implementing physician consulting for healthy living, eating habits, and end of life care for medicare patients in 2009, with the idea that it would save Medicare a ton of money in long term care costs.

Republicans revolted, labeled it death panels, implying that the government trying to save money by deciding who lives or doesnt. Now we have MAke America healthy again, which appears to just be a vehicle for spewing nonsense about vaccines and dumping mercury into tap water.

I wonder why that area has the same problem. Some overweight can be attributable to genes like in the case of the South Pacific islands. Most of the time diet is the culprit. Could be that those North African nations are developing a taste for fast food.

Regardless of what the govt tries to do, the party in opposition will complain. Thats normal. Individuals have the responsibility to be as healthy as they can and Im not sure many Americans realise that.

I'll bet her BMI is lower than yours, Pedro. Don't your people have a problem with downing too many tacos?

As far as the middle eastern countries go, I don't think regular exercise is part of their culture, especially for the women who have to waddle around wearing horse blanklets from head to toe and aren't allowed outside unless a male relative accompanies them.
What a charming culture and religion..

My Dad was an addict of chicharrones. Quite a fat man. I’m just a bit chubby. 6 foot 230 lbs I think.

Definitely a possibility.

LOl "I think"...that means it's probably more....
Even at 6 foot/230 lbs, your BMI is over 31.
That obese, not "a bit chubby".
I'm 6 foot and 190, I'm 20 lbs overweight, but at 75 y/o I have an excuse.
What's yours, tubby?
AND MY WIFE'S BMI IS A LOWER THAN YOURS.
Idiot.

Trump doesn't go get his own McDonald's, though.

So, so eager to roll out the brownshirts.

If this was a Dem president suggesting this, the Trumpublicans would be screaming from the rafters.

Yeah, and MAHA is really MAHAhahahaha.
