About half of all workers worldwide are in danger of having their livelihoods destroyed because of the pandemic, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has warned.
The figure equates to more than 1.5 billion people.
Covid-19 has infected more than 3.1 million people around the world and killed nearly 220,000.
The ILO says those with informal work arrangements are most in danger - many are in the retail sector, manufacturing and food services industry.
Already, two billion informal workers have seen their wages fall by a global average of 60% during the first month that the pandemic unfolded in their region.
"For millions of workers, no income means no food, no security and no future. Millions of businesses around the world are barely breathing,” said ILO Director-General Guy Ryder.
“They have no savings or access to credit. These are the real faces of the world of work. If we don’t help them now, they will simply perish,” he added.
@huckleberryhound saidIt may very well come to that. We're in uncharted territory.

Yes there is a huge cost which each nation will bear independently and yes poorer countries will struggle to recover, but this type of rhetoric is just ott imo.
@divegeester saidWhy is a comment like this any different from climate change denial, or anti vaccers?

@earl-of-trumps saidLosers!
I really wonder how much they did "shut down" during the polio epidemic.
We had a president that died in office with polio. People in those days were tough. They knew their duty. They worked their asses off. And they knew that not working meant starvation.
All they had to do was print monopoly money and live like kings!
@huckleberryhound saidYou mean other than climate and vaccinations being around for hundreds of years whereas this speculative report is just a bit of latest BBC doom and gloom?

@earl-of-trumps saidAhhh yes the good old days of feudal lords and serfs that knew their place.

@divegeester saidIt’s not a BBC report it’s a collaborative report from the UN and the ILO, and it’s not advocating the lifting of the lockdown.

“
The ILO said the dire situation facing the world’s most vulnerable workers should lead governments to urgently extend their bailout programmes to include “targeted and flexible measures to support workers and businesses, particularly smaller enterprises, those in the informal economy and others who are vulnerable”.
Ryder said he hoped governments would recognise that they needed to reconstruct their economies around better working practices and “not a return to the pre-pandemic world of precarious work for the majority.”

2)it was a UN report, would you prefer an article from the guardian?
Between 135 million extra people starving, and 1.6 billion losing their livelihoods... In thinking the UN might be a bit worried about the ol lock down mate.
Not these experts!! When I said believe the experts, I meant those other experts... The ones that agree with me!
