While money doesn't make you happy, the absence or shortage of it can make you unhappy.

I am glad they're defending us too. They're more manly than I am.

That's how I'm feeling. I've never had a job with homework before. I'm expected to go home and keep working - grading papers, preparing lessons, preparing worksheets, calling parents, etc.

When I go home I want to be FREE! But the educational system has this thing for keeping it's claws around your neck no matter when or where.

From what I un ...[text shortened]... earch is leaning towards not giving students homework any more, which I think is BRILLIANT!
I fervently hope you don't teach English.

No, it's not! I am "in class" 7.5 hours a day. Other jobs are 8 hours a day. I work far more than that extra half hour every day, plus weekends. At my school each lesson plan for three subjects is two pages, and for the other it can be one page because the format is different. That's a minimum of ten hours a week on lesson plans alone -- if I can crank one out in half an hour. Then there are those leisurely 20-minute lunches four days a week and lunch meeting the remaining day.

In case you haven't noticed, you don't actually know much about how American teachers spend their time.

Isn't this your first year? Is this something you'll get better at with time and practice? Or does it just totally stink?

Well, if you take away teaching summer school and going to workshops, about a month in the summer. I do school stuff most of Christmas vacation and most of Spring Break. I do try to take off a day or two then, but usually can't manage more than that. My theory is that we work the same number of hours as non-teachers, but we squish it into a shorter time period.

Yes, yes. However I just cannot imagine constant working. Going home and continuing work is psychic torture to me.

On working in general - If you don't enjoy what you're doing, do yourself a favour and do something else! In most countries of the world slavery has been abolished, and people have freedom to chose what they want to do.

On Wealth and Living - Understand the difference between Standard of Living and Quality of Life

On Teaching - It is a great pity that many teachers (at least here in South Africa) are leaving the profession due to long hours and low pay, in spite of being excellent teachers. We should value teachers highly in society since they are forming the next generation

On Jlilly - Some good advice for you in some of these posts - stop your bitching and take it!
