I think this covid thing brings to light something very strange in the US. At least it is strange to me.
If I get sick, I go to my doctor or go to an urgent care. This is because I am not of the lowest socio economic group.
The poor go directly to emergency rooms at hospitals if they get sick. The poorest people go to the most expensive option because they will not actually pay for the services they receive.
It is actually their culture that overloads hospitals.

@eladar saidIndeed. I was at Loma Linda Medical Center, a huge top-notch state of the art facility run by the 7th day Adventists. The waiting rooms on every floor I went to were filled with people that obviously had no insurance and weren't going to pay a dime. Buncha tattooed foul-mouthed thuggish looking vato locos all over the place.
For the poor it is free, but it is costing us the most and making health insurance for the rest of us more expensive.
@cliff-mashburn saidI was raised in Redlands, so I know much about Loma Linda.

@eladar said“They” could have been you, but for chance.🤔

@great-big-stees saidSo you believe people are as they are by destiny. I see how people make decisions that have consequences.

@eladar saidDo you believe that all people who are in a position of not being able to pay for things are in that position of their own volition? There certainly are “some”, I’ll give you that, but I believe, for the vast majority are not.
So you believe people are as they are by destiny. I see how people make decisions that have consequences.
@great-big-stees saidAll? Of course not. There are those that have extremely low IQ or severe mental issues.

But a majority of the poor do not fit this description. Most blew their chance at getting an education because they did not value education and blew off school. Many also have issues with authority in general and blame others for their lack of financial success.
Being a drug addict and living a life based on what feels good at the moment does not lay a good foundation for success in life.
@eladar saidI read your response over, “a couple of times”, to make sure that I got the gist of what it was you were saying. Why on earth would you paint everyone, who’s down and out, excluding the ones you mentioned with mental disabilities, for whatever the reason, with the same brush? There are most likely a myriad reasons why they find themselves in their situation...some self induced no doubt and likely even then I’m sure they have some serious underlying issues. Help those people. Some may even become contributing citizens. Ya I’m a “bleeding heart/socialist” Liberal.😲

@vivify saidI live in Canada, where some health care is free. Every once in a while some politician tries floating a “per visit fee” when seeing the doctor or hospital (like $5.00). It seems like the government is averse to such an idea as it is always shot down. I realize that it could be complicated, or maybe not, to at least try it.
it's insurance companies that drive up the cost of health care. This is why single-payer is a better option.

@great-big-stees saidWhy do I make a generality about generalities? I do not know, maybe because it is a generality?

Of course there are a few exceptions to the rule, but that does not mean the rule is not generally correct.
You make bad decisions, you suffer the consequences.
Why do you want to pretend that most people are not the result of their own decisions and making poor decisions? Enabling people only allows them to continue in their poor life choices.
@eladar saidThat is the very same argument

that was used by The Obama Administration
when trying to pass The Affordable Care Act yet,
you and yours, fought it all the way, watered it down
and now there exists the condition you describe.
ELDAR, here is a partial explanation.
