The only way to eliminate poverty is through growth. Not that growth is sufficient, but it is necessary. Eliminate growth and poor countries will remain just that: poor.

.... and you thought nobody thought of that before ? Ask Rwingett how Stalin "reformed" the agricultural system.

Why ask me? I want nothing to do with Stalin.

I thought you just might know what happened. That might even be one of the reasons why you don't like the man.

Are there any socialists who where in power one time who you like or admire ?

The anarchist wing of the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War is as close as it gets. I'm more partial to the IWW labor leaders like Big Bill Haywood, and anarchist agitators like Emma Goldman, than to communist heads of state. Although Castro, despite all his many flaws, gets a measure of grudging respect for steadfastly defying U.S. imperialism for 40+ years.

I've just finished reading "Joe Hill" by Franklin Rosemont, Charles Kerr Punlishing Co., 2002. Have you read it, rwingett? Excellent look at the IWW.

No, I haven't read that one. I've got a few other books on the IWW, though.

I just went to see Utah Phillips in concert Wednesday. He's an anarchist folk singer and card carrying member of the IWW. They had representatives from the IWW selling merchandise out in the hallway. I tried to get an IWW t-shirt in extra large. It seems they didn't have any extra large. Darn anarchists. I bet greedy capitalists would have had shirts in extra large. But I digress...

LOL! Did you check the IWW merchandise to see if it was "Made in China"? I've never heard Utah Phillips sing but I know the name. If you get a chance to borrow or buy Rosemont's "Joe Hill", do it. It's the best book I've read on the IWW. What's more, Rosemont has a very readable writing style. The book also contains many IWW cartoons, song lyrics and photographs.

What's with this guillotine fascination, rwingett? Up to now I've always thought of Ann Arbor as a yuppie, dope smoking, peacenik, ecologically conscious, rather effeminate community. College football excluded, of course.
LOL.....rec coming your way.....😀

Utah Phillips is well worth hearing. He's a storyteller/singer. In his CDs and shows he alternates between talking about the Wobblies and singing the old labor songs. He did two CDs with Ani DiFranco called Fellow Workers and The Past Didn't Go Anywhere that I would recommend.

They have that book you mentioned advertised in the copy of the "Industrial Worker" that I picked up at the show. I'll have to check it out sometime.

I will check for Utah Phillips CDs. As long as we seem to be talking real time here, do you know if IWW has a website? I'll check Google later, but if you know offhand how about passing along the address.
