i honestly dont think that anyone at my school respects the fact that i am the only one there in the military. i mean my school has well over 1000 students and only one is in the military how screwed up is that. and i get crap from everyone at school the one time i had to got to drill right after school i got food thrown at me and literally thrown down the hall way because i was wearing my uniform because i wouldnt have time to change after school. i dont understand how you can disrespect someone that is going out there to protect you and your country.

I don't think its remotely 'screwed up' that young people are choosing to not join the military. I think its a good thing. Its sensible.
For too long, working class kids around the world have been economically coerced into joining the military, in the hope of getting a trade, or getting their further education funded, or just getting out of a hopeless neighbourhood.
If kids in the US are realising they're being conned, good luck to them.
no see no one at my school respects anyone in the military. the different branches come to my school during to lunch and hand out information but everytime they get a phone call they say that they are not interested. how is that respect. i mean yeah at first i would have done that but then i hung out at the guard in my city and found it to be enjoyable and then i joined the national guard and yeah i am the youngest person in my unit but i dont care. being the youngest 17 year old in my unit is hard.

I really disagree with this. Respect needs to be earned. Sure, sometimes it should be implicit - like children respecting parents etc. But it the adult world, it should be earned.
So, why should anyone respect a dictatorial leader of another (or their own) country? Why should anyone respect the military?
I agree that people who have fought in wars deserve some kind of respect - they've been through ordeals, and whether or not I agree with the war, I have to respect the people who were there.
But just pulling on the uniform shouldn't, in itself, provide a guarantee of respect from the wider community.
Anyway - not wanting to join up isn't disrespectful - its just common sense.
im not saying that everyone should join the military. but i am saying that if they dont respect the fact that i joined to protect their civil liberties then they are truly fu*ked up. they should at least understand that ppl like me joined the military at a time like this to help the country. if it wasnt for all the new recruits since 9-11 we would have had a draft. and i dont think that any one at the age of 18 and up would want to be drafted for war. would you want to be drafted for war? probably not. thats why we joined after 9-11 so that you ppl can be kept away from the draft idea

You're supposed to be in the military because you want to protect freedom of speech and all that jazz, yet you fail to respect other people's point of view.
Join the military if you must (though I think you're nuts if you do), but other people have right to tell the recruiters they're not interested. Other people don't have to respect you because you're in uniform.

Also I don't see the US soldiers in Irag as "protecting my freedom". Our soldiers aren't protecting US citizens there. They're controlling another country. There's a huge difference between defending the homeland and invading a foreign country.
As for the actions of your fellow students - they were wrong to throw food, or taunt you or anyone else in uniform. That is disrespectful. But not because you're in the military, but simply because it's just wrong to do that to anyone.

The uniform you wear is not worthy of any respect.
The actions people carry out while wearing it may earn respect, but that's not the same thing. Equally the actions of some people in uniform earn disrespect.
Do something heroic or brave and you've maybe earned some respect. Otherwise it might as well be a McDonalds uniform.

If only they were that kind of 'red states', but sadly no.
I think it relates to the colouring books issued to some of our friends in the US so they can understand their elections.
Red crayon = republican;
Blue crayon = commie-pinko-liberal.
And guess what the purple states are?
