How Much Money Do You Need To "Get By" On?

Debates

I can squeak by on about 3 grand a month in Tucson, Arizona.
People in NYC, Los Angeles, Frisco, will obviously need a lot more.

$250k/year, absolute bare minimum

6 kids, private schools and New York prices and taxes will do that to ya

3k a month is fairly luxurious even in LA. Rent a room for 650 plus food and car insurance is “getting by”…

But not thriving.

3k/month is luxurious in LA?
What do you call luxurious?

I would think a million a year would be more like it with six kids, private schools, etc.

@AThousandYoung
What are you renting for 650 a month? A closet?

https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/ca/los-angeles/

THAT says 2600 a month is average in LA.

Some 32 THOUSAND a year just for an apartment of 700 square feet.

funny how different people have different "absolute bare minimums"

wonder what the mom sending her kids to undefunded public schools while working 12 hour a day thinks of your minimum and you voting against candidates looking to improve her absolute bare minimum while taxing you slightly more.

Having an apartment to oneself shouldn’t be luxury but it is

Which explains the homelessness problem

Which makes your 3 grand a month claim of being luxurious in LA kind of stupid, doesn't it?

The average income in the Netherlands is 2.300 euro a month after taxes. Usually there’s a Summer and Christmas bonus added to this, which roughly translates as 13x 2.300 euro a year (after taxes).

In Europe the consensus is that roughly 1/3 of your salary will go to housing, electricity, heating and water.
House prices are way too high at the moment for a lot of people.

The average Joe gets 4 weeks paid vacation a year and about 7 days extra fixed holidays (like Christmas).

No, it means it’s a luxury to have a home.

So...a room...in someone's house.... can be had for 7 or 8 hundred a month.
Cool.

Hey, I'm not complaining. It's the life I've chosen. I could have had fewer kids, send to public schools and live in Podunk, Iowa. I also think my federal taxes are fine (my property taxes are too high, but that's because of incompetent local government and certain silly state allocation rules, not a philosophical issue).

Given my lifestyle choices, I must make a quarter of a million dollars a year to avoid serious money problems. So I work two full time jobs and I do.

The "mom sending her kids to underfunded public schools while working 12 hour a day" also has her interests to worry about and certainly she deserves to make the voting choices she deems best for her. One thing really has nothing to do with the other.
