"Then" is the key word. Bad politics and deregulation changed things. I think things have changed for the worse. Especially among those who don't have real estate speculation as a profession.
As a young kid, saving 50k to buy a home is very difficult. It's not about phone upgrades.

We lived there a few years sold it and bought a little nicer one that needed work and did the same thing again.
