A few people have mentioned in various threads the problem of illegal immigration and secure borders in the United States. For those who the name Ralph Nader doesn't make you salivate in rage, I would recommend you read his extensive and (I believe) well-reasoned policy statement at: http://www.votenader.com/issues/index.php?cid=33. A tidbit: " We have to control our immigration and our borders. We have to limit the number of people who come into this country illegally ....." and proposes several short-term and long-term measures to address the problem.

You can compare Ralph's proposals to Bush's and Kerry's position on the issue discussed on their websites; well, in theory you could, but in actuality I couldn't find an immigration heading under Issues on either one! So you won't even see the platitudes on this issue that you see regarding every other issue on their sites!

For those disgusted with both of these clowns, I would maintain that Ralph's willingness to deal with this issue and his knowledgeable discussion of it in contrast to the rich boy's candidates, is another good reason to cast your vote for Nader on Tuesday.

Illegal immigration is a big issue here in Europe as well.
Very strange, like 100 years ago it didn't exist at all!

And there's all this talk about globalization. Surely if the rich and their money can flow where-ever they want to, so can the people who produce this money?

Probably just me...

That is because a 100 years ago, Europeans were the illegal immigrants. And they shot anyone who objected to them coming to their country.

If you actually read the site, you'll see it ties in immigration issues with the entire globalization issue. I think they are very closely linked and Ralph's long-term proposals refer to the raising of the average person's standard of living in ALL countries, not just the US.

If there was one global world government, which was responsible for jobs, healthcare, welfare, etc for all then I don't see that free and unlimited migration would be that much of a problem. There would probably still be some overcrowding/housing problems in some areas and some depopulation problems in others, but that might be solvable.
When the countries are separate entities it causes more problems because a country receiving large numbers of immigrants has to accomodate those which inevitably incurs extra expense, both financial and environmental (new houses, new roads, welfare, pensions, etc), plus there will be more competition for jobs and houses.
I don't think there will be a united global governement anytime soon, but I expect it to happen in the next few hundred years.
