No, it seems to me that sport is when people engage in various
jesture-like activities (like football for instance) for pay, at the amusement

I agree. So, if a chess tournament become like a football match with all those lager-drinking chess-hooligans barging in to constantly shout their support for “their side” (the players they support) and throw glass bottles and swearing and do finger gestures to the chess fans of the “other side” and then riot with mindless violence against the chess fans of the other side if their side looses, and if players fowl by punching/kicking their opponent and then argue the toss at the referee when the referee disqualifies them, then, and only then, will chess be undignified enough to be a true “sport” (joke).

One possible way of defining a sport could be: Would it look incongruous if one of the chief protagonsts won "Sports Personality of the Year".
Chess is the 'new' beautiful game imo.
