Chess imposes none of the conditions or requirements on a person that a sport does: it does not require physical exertion or hand-eye coordination, there is no physical risk to a participant. A 40-pound man can do it while completely under the influence of psychotropic and/or hallucinogenic substances - perhaps not well, but he can still pick up a 2-ounce piece of wood and move it from one place to another. It is not possible for 400-pound men to play soccer, football, drive a racecar, shoot a basketball, climb a cliff, defend a wicket, or any of the other myriad activities one performs when playing an actual sport.
It is ... if the game is played in a structured competitive setting such as a league or in the context of a match or a tournament.
Chess is a game. It is not a sport.

Yes, Chess IS a sport, just not athletic by definition. It's been on ESPN, and is in the New York Times Sports section like it or not. It's just not an athletic sports.
Athletics and Sports are different. Some sports are less popular, granted. Table Tennis, Bowling, Darts, and Pool are some other sports, they are arguably not athletic.

i'd say no, unless the board is huge and the pieces are heavy in which case it becomes a sport
