Do you take away a person's freedom due to fear of what might happen?
Yes.
You are not allowed the freedom of having a nuclear arsenal in your back-yard.

It's the FEAR of what might happen!

You believe that you are the state's servant, the state has no obligation to treat you with respect. You are a serf.

No reason beyond a group of experts
Let's make decisions based on the opinions of non-experts then!

We did, but it was a mistake.

If you need to quarantine the elderly, do so, but no need to quarantine the healthy young people.

There, answered your thought experiment. People should choose to go to work or not.
That is completely orthogonal to my thought experiment. My thought experiment is about a hypothetical disease and a hypothetical vaccine. It conclusions have nothing to do with freedom to make choices. Insight can be gained by thinking it through.

So you assume a vaccine, do you think it is a wise practice to base health policy on something that does not exist?

No. It's not wise to base policy on something that does not exist. That being said, it is wise to ensure you are thinking clearly about the information you do have. For that, thought experiments can be useful. And to engage in abstract thinking is not going to be painful nor harmful.

It is just useless to do worthless thought experiments.

In any case, it is not wise to prevent the young getting immunity naturally based on the hope that a vaccine exists.

I still do not understand how people who stay home can get sick from people in public.

Retired folks stay at home. If you have a job, go to your job. If you have health issues get a doctor to qualify you for staying home and you can get special covid subsidies.

Do what you can to keep covid out of nursing homes. If a big city is shut down, quarantine, nobody is allowed out.

That was the proper response, with education on how to boost your immune system with Vitamins D, A and C as well as Zinc.

@Eladar

I understand you want things to open up (and never have closed). I don't think anyone is confused about that. Still, there is a lot of fallacy thinking being floated around on social media that could benefit from some clarity of thinking. I see you're not interested.

And I know you feel like it is a waste of time to think about things in an abstract sense. It seems much less so than repeating the same opinion over and over with neither improved articulation nor any new insight.

As long as trash gets talked about, the trash will persist. Why contribute to the trash when you can just discuss the truth?

This question is so much better aimed at you.

Properly speaking, serfdom refers to a contractual relationship between private persons.
