Is Omicron genetically engineered?

The title to the article below is called "Omicron variant may have picked up a piece of common-cold virus".

Here is an excerpt from the article:

"This genetic sequence does not appear in any earlier versions of the coronavirus, called SARS-CoV-2, but is ubiquitous in many other viruses including those that cause the common cold, and also in the human genome, researchers said"

Concluding this is a naturally evolved variant that took some genes from the common cold deserves some scrutiny in my opinion. I'm not saying it can't happen, just that it deserves skepticism. What is next, are we going to just accept the next variant is part henipavirus without raising an eyebrow?

Why are they so convinced it occurred naturally though? Should we all just accept that without question? What if the next variant has henipavirus in it? Gonna keep accepting it is a natural occurrence every time?
