Can you believe that school dinners is top of the political agenda in the UK.

Put there by a celebrity chef and a TV programme, what a watered down world, we live in.

Kids should be offered only wholesome decent food......this is a no-brainer. (Although the parents will have to pay for it)

But it is so sad to see our populist politicians jumping from one band wagon to another with no conviction or direction waiting to see what tomorrow's Daily Mail headline will be.

I agree and disagree with you.

Obviously children should be given a varied diet and taught to feed themselves nutriously.

But, in the meantime, if one or other cook (read: twat) is willing to offer his sevices to give them better food than what they're getting...so be it.

Jamie Oliver ... who's payed millions for a 30 second ad by Sainsburys ... has persuaded the government to raise the spending on school meals per child from 37 p to 50 p ... which brings it up to about 1/4 of the price of a big mac per sprog per day ... how come I can't buy food that cheap?

If you were buying in bulk for 18,000 kids I'm sure you could cook a nutrious 3 course meal for 50p a person

Well there you have it. Any excuse or reason to detract away from them getting criticised for
a) Poor, or no policies
b) Who they were caught in bed with
c) What fiddles they have been up to.

I don't care who they sleep with, I kind of expect a little expenses fiddling too but I also expect long term aims. With strategies and goals set out to achieve them.

Labour has down well with class size, unemployment and waiting lists but it is losing focus and starting to follow a Daily Mail agenda

The class size i agree with, but i can't help but feel that they are skirting over the unemployment issue. It is based on people who are unemployed AND claiming benefits. This doesn't necessarily mean that more people are earning a crust legitimately.
I remember when the JSA first came out and they started kicking people off the dole for fun because of the new stricter criteria to qualify for it. in the same year. Huge cuts in unemployment were reported but so was a significant rise in theft and petty crime. Just kicking people off the dole is not a long term solution and does not address the true issues.

I feel that children should be armed with spears and turned into the streets at the age of 8 to hunt and fend for themselves. The survivors can be claimed at the age of 13 and reintroduced into civilized society. This will strengthen our society, teach kids the meaning of a good days work and spice up a stroll through the neighbourhood.

It is a disgrace that we need a famous tv cook and a lot of media attention to get schoolchildren a decent and healthy schoolmeal. What about all those teachers who undoubtedly teach the children after they have swollowed the unhealthy fatty stuff that they should use their heads and eat healthy food .......... I bet they even have those money making machines in schools to sell Coca-Cola, Seven-up, Dr.Pepper, Mars, Milky Way ... and of course Nuts ......

The school meals issue has been on the political agenda in Scotland for a few years now, and not because of some rich celebrity-chef.

There has been a motion to the Scottish Parliament for free nutritious school meals, which labour and the libdems voted down. The intention is to raise it again.

For the people who are knocking Jamie Oliver in this thread, I have to strongly disagree. To see the crap he went through cos of his desire to see kids eat food as opposed to "food", was awe inspiring. He may have come across as a prat at times in the show, but he has achieved his aim, which was better school dinners for kids.

If every celebrity (cos lets admit to ourselves, we live in a celebrity/tv driven world. A dog gets run over in the street, and people talk about how like that episode of Eastenders it was) took on an as noble and worthwhile cause as Jamie has done, and spent 1 and a half years working hard for it, then I think our kids and ourselves would have a much better chance in life. Some of the kids in the show were only crapping once/twice a week due to the lack of fibre in their diet.

Shame on Tony Bliar and his cabinet for saying that improving school dinners has always been near the top of their agenda. 8 years later and nothing happens until a celebrity gets public backing through a real life tv program. Its sickening how Margaret Thatcher effed up england (it was her conservative government which got rid of nutritious meals for kids, among other things) and Ireland so much, and "New" "Labour" have done nothing in their capacity as a socialist party to improve the situation (until now). The problem with socialism so far is that its a great support/vote getter, but 9 times out of 10, once the people's party get into power, then the ordinary man is forgotten. New Labour should really be called "New Conservatives".

Back to the diet thing, I'm happy to say that I spent my first day today working on the premises for my home town's (and mine) first juice and smoothie and salad bar. We hope to open in about 3 weeks. Since I got my father into drinking wheatgrass and juices, and eating raw superfoods, his cholesterol problem has more than halved. In 6 months. Sorry, just wanted to share my excitement. 🙂

Here, here
I think the statistics were something like 37p spent on each meal in England compared to 66p in Scotland & 1.25 in France. If Jamie Oliver hadn't have done his program, then the kids would still be eating rubbish for another 10 years. I expect the queen will reward him with something in the next honours list.

Proably. However, Tony Blair decides on the honours, the Queen just rubber stamps them.
