Sometimes the ironies of life can be simple and yet overwhelming.
I have been watching all the press coverage of the death of Terri Schiavo and the impending death of the Pope. Schiavo was just a person like the rest of us. She was a young woman living her life when suddenly she was handed a death sentence by fate. For 15 years, her body was kept alive. Finally she was allowed to die.
The Pope has lived a long and extraordinary life, and now, at the end, he was able to chose the way he wishes to die. He has opted not to go to the hospital for any extra ordinary measures. He is a lucky man to be cognizant to the end, and to be able to choose how he wishes to die.
I wish that Terri Schiavo had had the same choice. I wish that everyone had the same choice.

We can each have a choice if we plan ahead.

I have a Living Will. In my emergency contact info is a list of 3 people that I trust. Each has a copy of the Living Will. They are an attorney, my priest and a trusted friend. Should anything happen to me, they have the authority to see to it that my wishes are respected. I also told my family and other close friends what I want.

I have a regular will inspite of the fact that I have little and own less but I know where I want things to go and what I want to have happen. I even have instructions for my funeral...keep it simple, say the prayers, cry a bit and then go have a dancing.

I don't have any reason to think I won't be around tomorrow but this gives me piece of mind. I don't want my family wasting their resources or what little I have or even the state's to keep me alive when I can't live. I prefer that money be spent on the living.

I do as well. I just hope it isn't my sister who ends up in charge of my life. She would pull the plug sooooooo fast!

It is interesting that the Christian fundies do not bash the Pope for being "anti-life" or "the culture of death" when he chose instead to simply die with dignity instead of picking the option to be kept "alive" and brain dead indefinately on machines like Terri Shiavo. If being kept on machines for centuries is now considered "living" amongst the religious masses, then I guess using their new found logic, the pope has commited suicide. I wonder what Ivanhoe has to say about this, eh Ivanhoe?!

You don't think the Pope had the best medical support available??

Just because he was not put on life support does not mean they had the option and did not take it. Life support would not have done him any good, his heart and kidneys failed. Shiavo's organs were functioning until she was staved to death.

Well we know her husband made a choice for her using her name, I
wonder what her choice was?

"Life support would not have done him any good"

Same for Terri Shiavo.

Let me rephrase. Life support would not have kept him alive. I don't know if keeping Shiavo alive was necessarily good, but starving her to death ...? No clear answers for that situation (not from me anyhow).

More lies; the court made a "choice" based on credible evidence of Terri's wishes as expressed to several persons, not just her husband. Her husband's wishes played no part in the decision according to the law of Florida and the court's decision. If you had bothered to read the court decisions or the article I cited you'd know this; if you did read them, they you are deliberately telling falsehoods and I wish you would stop.

Okay, the court not Terri made the choice. I thought it was her
husband, but you should know. I wonder what she wanted?

She made what she wanted known to those closest to her. You just refused to accept her choice for your own selfish political and religious reasons. Thankfully, all personal decisions made in the United States do not have to meet with KellyJay's approval.
