From the BBC:
“Dr Catherine Connolly, from the group Stop Killer Robots, said the move was a "slippery slope" that could distance humans from killing.”

Uhuh. So, like, there’s an action group against killer robots? One can only suppose it’s better than an action group FOR killer robots.
So what’s this all aboot then:
San Francisco's ruling Board of Supervisors has voted to let the city's police use robots that can kill.
Uhuh… well… okay… that’s not really a good thing. Surely? It’s bad enough being shot by a redneck racist cop, never mind a C3PO glitching on bloody Windows 11.
Anything more:
A spokesperson for the police said "robots could potentially be equipped with explosive charges to breach fortified structures containing violent, armed, or dangerous subjects".
They also said robots could be used to "incapacitate, or disorient violent, armed, or dangerous suspects who pose a risk of loss of life".
Wait a minute. Is this a robot as in autonomous AI unit? Or are we talking about sticking a Lewis bomb on a remote control car of sorts?
Ahhh. Uhuh…
Okay. So the debate is: should we militarise the police.
Not, should they have killer robots.
I think.
@shavixmir
It a person pressing a button to fire the robot's gun or is the robot making that decision? Drone robots are going to be used. It is just a question of how they operate when they kill.
@metal-brain saidYes. I know.

Is it a person pressing a button to fire the robot's gun or is the robot making that decision? If it is the former we already do that with drones to drop bombs on mostly innocent civilians and few Americans know or care about it.
If it is the latter that is a problem. Who do you hold accountable when an innocent bystander gets shot by an autonomous robot?
@earl-of-trumps saidThat would depend, wouldn’t it?
how long do you think it will take for some jackass to hack into the bot and have it shoot everything and everybody?
By what’s in the article, it’s more of a remote control than an AI robot. So, basically a remote control car with a bomb.
I don’t know if remote control planes, cars or drones are hackable (I presume one can larch on to the frequency, never seen it happen though… that being said, we used to have an all-round TV remote and stood outside other people’s houses changing their TV channels).
AI… that would be nasty. Agreed.
@metal-brain saidThat is the same debate as self-driving cars.

A very interesting debate at that. One, which currently (in the EU at least) still has the driver being responisible.

I’m pretty sure it’s the latter so they’ll still get the wrong house
Artificial intelligence is better than none at all
@metal-brain saidThat is, indeed, what the original article is about.
Already approved in San Francisco.

@shavixmir
America’s police are already militarized to a toxic extent, because American civilians are militarized to a toxic extent (e.g., Oath Takers, Proud Boys, etc.). Remote detonated vehicles (drones etc.) designed to penetrate fortified installations are thinkable only in a country where people build fortified installations (e.g., Waco TX). So, sure, killer robots are simply the next logical step in an insane society. Let the cops have their killer robots; it won’t be long before Oath Takers, Proud Boys, KKK, etc. all have them too; I just won’t live there.
